Pool Sand Filter Maintenance: What to Check

A pool can look clear while its filter is doing far more work than it should. Rising pressure, weak return flow and cloudy water after a busy weekend are often early signs that attention is needed. Regular pool sand filter maintenance keeps water circulating properly, reduces strain on the pool pump and helps chemicals work as intended.

A sand filter is straightforward equipment, but it is not maintenance-free. The sand bed captures fine debris as water passes through the tank, while the multiport valve directs water through filtering, backwashing, rinsing or bypassing functions. Looking after each part at the right time is more effective than reacting once the water has already turned green or the pump starts losing flow.

Start with the pressure gauge

The pressure gauge is one of the most useful diagnostic tools on a sand filter. After a thorough backwash and rinse, take note of the normal operating pressure. This is your clean-filter baseline. Mark it on the gauge if practical, or keep a note with your pool records.

When the pressure rises roughly 20 to 25 per cent above that clean reading, the filter is usually due for a backwash. For example, if the clean pressure is 100 kPa, consider backwashing when it reaches around 120 to 125 kPa. The exact reading matters less than the increase from the known clean baseline.

A high pressure reading generally means the filter is collecting debris as it should. However, pressure that rises unusually quickly can point to a heavy bather load, storm debris, algae, poor water balance or a damaged internal component. Low pressure is different. It may indicate a blocked pump basket, restricted suction line, air entering the system, a worn pump impeller or a valve issue.

Check the gauge with the pump running and the system set to Filter. If the needle is stuck, cracked or filled with water, replace the gauge before using pressure readings to make maintenance decisions.

Backwash only when the filter needs it

Backwashing reverses water flow through the filter tank and sends trapped debris out through the waste line. It is necessary, but overdoing it wastes water and can reduce filtration performance. A lightly loaded sand bed can filter very effectively, so avoid putting the filter on a calendar-only backwash routine.

Before moving the multiport valve, always switch the pump off. Turning the handle while water is flowing can damage the valve gasket, commonly called the spider gasket, and create internal bypassing between ports.

To backwash, set the valve to Backwash, start the pump and run it until the sight glass water is clear. This commonly takes two to three minutes, although heavily soiled water may need longer. Switch the pump off, move the valve to Rinse, then run the pump for around 20 to 30 seconds. Rinsing settles the sand bed and stops dirty water being pushed back into the pool when normal filtration resumes.

Switch off again, return the valve to Filter and restart the pump. Check that the return flow has recovered and record the new pressure reading. If the pressure stays high immediately after a correct backwash, the sand may be compacted, contaminated or in need of replacement. A blocked or undersized waste line can also limit how well the filter cleans itself.

Keep the pump basket and skimmer clear

A sand filter cannot perform well if the pump is starved of water. Empty skimmer baskets regularly, particularly after wind, rain or heavy pool use. Check the pump strainer basket at the same time, isolating and switching off the pump first.

Leaves, hair, gum nuts and small toys can restrict flow before they ever reach the filter. A full basket may cause low flow, introduce air into the system and place unnecessary load on the pump. Inspect the pump lid O-ring for dirt, flattening or cracking, and apply a suitable silicone-based lubricant when required. Do not use petroleum-based grease, as it can damage rubber seals.

For pools near trees, a skimmer sock can reduce the amount of fine debris reaching the basket and make routine cleaning quicker. It does not replace a basket check, but it can be useful during high-leaf periods.

Check the sand bed, laterals and valve

Filter sand does not need replacing every year. In many domestic pools, quality filter media can last five to seven years, sometimes longer with sensible water treatment and backwashing. The right interval depends on water chemistry, swimmer load, local dust, organic debris and how often the system has been run.

Signs the media deserves closer inspection include persistent cloudy water despite correct chemistry, frequent backwashing, poor flow after backwashing, or sand appearing in the pool. Sand returning through the pool jets often indicates a cracked lateral, damaged standpipe or internal seal issue rather than worn sand alone.

When replacing media, use correctly graded pool filter sand or a compatible alternative approved for the specific filter. Do not substitute builders' sand. Its particle size and contaminants are unsuitable for pool filtration and may lead to poor water clarity or internal damage.

Changing filter media requires care. Isolate power, relieve pressure, drain the tank and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for access to the internals. The laterals at the bottom of the tank are easily damaged if old media is removed aggressively. Inspect each lateral for splits and make sure the standpipe is properly seated before refilling. Cover the top of the standpipe while adding new media so sand cannot enter it and travel straight back to the pool.

The multiport valve also needs periodic inspection. Leaks at the valve, waste port or around the clamp can be caused by worn O-rings, a damaged spider gasket, loose fittings or a warped valve body. A small external leak can become an air leak when the pump stops, affecting priming and circulation at the next start-up.

Water balance affects filtration performance

A filter removes suspended debris, but it cannot compensate for poor water chemistry. If chlorine, pH, total alkalinity or stabiliser levels are out of range, fine particles and early algae growth can overwhelm the filtration system. The result is often dull or cloudy water even though the pump appears to be operating normally.

Keep testing consistent, especially during hot Australian weather, after storms and when the pool has had a lot of use. A high bather load brings sunscreen, body oils and fine contaminants into the water. These can clog the sand bed faster and increase chemical demand.

If the pool is cloudy, do not assume more backwashing is the first answer. Test the water, confirm circulation, inspect baskets and assess filter pressure. In some cases, a suitable pool clarifier or flocculant may help gather fine particles, but the product and method need to suit the pool system. Floccing, for example, normally requires vacuuming settled material to waste and can waste a significant amount of water.

Set a practical maintenance routine

Most pool owners can prevent major filtration problems with short, regular checks. Once a week, inspect the water level, empty baskets, check return flow and compare the pressure gauge with the clean baseline. Test and adjust water chemistry according to the pool treatment plan.

Each month, inspect the pump lid, O-rings, visible pipework and multiport valve for leaks. Also check that the equipment area is clean, ventilated and free of leaves that can block motor cooling vents. Never hose electrical components or open a pump housing while it is connected to power.

At the beginning of the swimming season, or after an extended shutdown, inspect the filter tank, clamp band, gauge and valve fittings before returning the system to normal operation. If a tank is cracked, the clamp is damaged, or the equipment is leaking under pressure, stop the system and arrange qualified advice. Pressurised filter equipment should not be repaired with improvised fittings or sealants.

When a filter problem needs further investigation

Some faults resemble routine maintenance but need a more detailed diagnosis. Constant air bubbles from the return jets can indicate a suction-side air leak. A pump that loses prime may have a lid seal, pipe connection or valve issue. Water flowing continuously from the waste line when the valve is on Filter commonly points to an internal multiport valve fault.

If the pressure is normal but circulation remains poor, check the pump basket, impeller and suction restrictions before blaming the sand filter. If pressure is very high and flow is low, isolate the system and inspect for a blocked filter, closed valve or restriction on the return line. For uncertain faults, getting the right advice early can prevent damage to the pump, filter internals and pipework.

A sand filter rewards simple, consistent care. Know its clean pressure, backwash only when required and investigate changes in flow before they become a water-quality problem. That approach keeps the pool ready to use and gives the pump system the best chance of a long, reliable service life.
